Beacons to take on Station House in playoff opener

ROLLINSFORD -- After a gruelling season of 20 games, the Beacons are just days away from entering the Dover Co-Rec League 2009 playoff tournament.
On Saturday, the Beacons will travel to Guppy Park in Dover to take on Station House at 9:15 a.m. The Beacons will also play at least a second game in the tournament win or lose because it is a double-elimination affair.
If the Beacons win their first playoff game Saturday, the team would then play a second game at 11:45 a.m. at Guppy Park. If they lose, they would then play at 1 p.m. at Goldstar Park in Rollinsford instead. Either way, this year's playoff tournament promises to be very competitive for all 11 teams in the league.
Look for Chumley's and Team Awareness to wage war against Navy Yard, the defending league champion. Other teams such as Merrill's Radiator, B.L. Limey and Post 47 could serve up some upsets. Given the fact that the tournament is wide open, anything can happen and any team, regardless of their end of season record has as good a chance as any other team to win it all.
Beacons Manager Bob Cook said he just learned when his team would be playing this weekend after attending a special league meeting in Rollinsford Monday night.
"We are really excited to play this Saturday and I know our guys and girls will be up for it," Cook said. "After 20 games, we all know what each person on this team is capable of doing and if we just play our game, some good defense and get the bats going early, we have as good a chance as anybody to win."
